  1. Zicam FDA
    June 21, 2009
Piscataway, (NJ). Medical professionals report that one hundred and thirty people lost their sense of smell after using popular cold remedy, Zicam. The FDA announced that the product could damage or completely destroy the product user’s sense of smell. Zicam users went into frenzy.
Jayne Smith, a Zicam consumer said, “ I used Zicam and now I can’t smell a thing!”
Matrixxx, the makers of Zicam, paid twelve million dollars in 2006 to settle three hundred and forty pending lawsuits. Doctors said that Zicam causes anosmia, a condition that results in the complete destruction of the sense of smell.
Attorneys and Zicam users are filing lawsuits against Matrixxx’s products. Attorney Jake Wilson said, “This is a horrifying time for consumers who have lost their ability to smell. These matters should be taken very seriously and Matrixxx should be held accountable and assume responsibility.”
However, Matrixxx refused to recall its products and instead only issued a consumer warning. Although the FDA does not have the power to recall products, the FDA has issued a letter to Matrixxx explaining the risks to the public’s safety.
Donna Williams, an FDA representative said, “we take these matters seriously, and consumers safety comes first.”
Matrixxx continues to defend its products, believing in the science of their products.
Melissa Williams, Matrixxx representative said, “We have confidence in all of our products and believe highly in the science of each and every product.”

Although the FDA does not have the power to issue product recalls. The FDA hopes the company will reconsider. In the meantime, consumers are alarmed about losing their sense of smell.
